Aussie Dollar Gains Ground on U.S. Greenback-Aug 28

The Australian dollar has picked up ground against the U.S. on Monday, with analysts expecting more strength out of the local currency to emerge this week.

At the Asian open, one Australian dollar was buying 79.24 U.S. cents, up from the 79.04 U.S. cents it was trading at later Friday.

The Australian dollar should continue to see steady against against the U.S. currency this week, according to Elias Haddad, senior currency strategist at CommSec who said on Monday that the U.S. dollar will be "softer" in this week of trade.

"In addition, the continued strength of Australian business surveys and commodity prices, and a lift in global demand, suggests the risk is a stronger second quarter capital expenditure (CAPEX) release," Haddad said.

"An upside surprise on CAPEX would join with the positive surprises on retail trade, and employment, to support Australian interest rates and the Australian dollar."

At 9:20am (AEST), one Australian dollar is buying 79.45 U.S. cents, while crude oil is trading at 47.89 U.S. dollars per barrel.
